Fog Globe - Golden Gate Bridge
Fog Globe - Golden Gate Bridge

Alternative Views:

The fog at San Francisco's Golden Gate is legendary. Created when moist ocean air drifts across the cold California current flowing parallel to the coastline, the sea, or advection, fog is drawn inland through this narrow gap in the Coast Range.

It then flows up and over the iconic bridge, wrapping it in a misty, billowing embrace. High atmospheric pressure can also push the fog down, blanketing the straight but leaving the bridge itself shining in the sun.

Mounted at mid-span and the south tower pier, the Golden Gate Bridge's fog horns have been guiding ships safely through the perilous straight into the San Francisco Bay since the bridge opened in 1937. To learn more, visit: http://goldengatebridge.org/research/factsGGBFogHorn.php.
